About Us

Established in 1959 by Sadie Belle Howell-Dudley, Dudley’s Driving School became a community staple in Newport News, Virginia, expanding to Hampton in the 1980s. Mrs. Dudley, fueled by Christian principles, overcame obstacles to offer driver instruction, using innovative methods like a homemade teaching board. Known for her sweet potato pies and aiding literacy, she earned recognition for her dedication until her passing in 1994.

Her son & daughter, Thomas E. Dudley, Sr. & DeEtta Gilliam-Dudley, commercialized the school in 1984, ensuring compliance with DMV standards in Virginia & Georgia. Now led by her grandson, Thomas E. Dudley, II, Dudley’s Driving Center Inc. continues the family legacy, prioritizing driver safety and community service for over 65 years.
